Skin Gritting: The Skincare Trend Going Viral for All the Right Reasons

Admit it. You’ve lingered on a Dr Pimple Popper video on your social feed at some point. There’s just something about seeing the gunk in our pores that is both deeply intriguing and also just super gross.

Resurfacing from the deep troves of Reddit comes the newest in un-look-away-able trend and it’s called ‘skin gritting’. Gritting skin involves using the combination of an oil cleanser and detoxifying clay mask to literally pull all the dirt, debris, and buildup from your pores, releasing them into tiny little ‘grits’ that you can wash away.

Sounds like magic right? The secret to skin gritting is in softening the debris in your pores with an oil before going in with your secret weapon: Australian Pink Clay.

What Is Skin Gritting?

No, it has nothing to do with the southern breakfast staple. Skin gritting is a three-step process for pore-cleaning that has become popular online the past year. Whether you think it’s gross or deeply satisfying, the results don’t lie. Though methods for gritting skin are a bit varied online, the general instructions are typically consistent, and many who have tried the skin gritting phenomenon report that it really does work, cleaning out pores with just two products and a relatively small amount of time.

Why Use the Australian Pink Clay Mask?

A clay mask is a staple in any beauty routine as a bi-weekly detoxing treatment to refine pores, clear skin congestion, and mattify excess oils. Left unchecked, pores can accumulate dirt, impurities, and oils that can lead to blackheads and buildup. Over time, this can lead to dullness and enlarged pores.

Australian pink clay works by drawing impurities out of your pores to the surface where they can be wiped away, leaving your skin smooth, clear, and clean. This makes the skin appear virtually poreless, feel silky soft, and act as the perfect canvas to apply makeup. And we think it’s the perfect choice for skin gritting.

    Skin Gritting Instructions

    1. Cleanse With Oil

On a makeup-free face, give your skin a good cleaning with the oil cleanser (we love Go-To Skincare's Fancy Face). Work it into every part of your face. According to experienced skin gritters, it’s a good idea to leave the oil on your face for about 10 minutes, because the oil in the product should bind to excess sebum in your pores. Thoroughly rinse off the cleanser and pat your face dry.

    2. Apply a Detoxifying Mask

Use a clay mask for the best detoxifying results. Our Porefining Mask is made with Australian Pink Clay, which acts as a powerful magnet to draw toxins and excess oil right out of your pores. Apply it generously over the entire face and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes or until dry. Remove the mask with a warm, wet hand towel and rinse until all the product is off. Pat dry with a clean towel.

    3. Repeat the Cleanser

Next, repeat washing your face with the oil cleanser, but this time, apply a bit more pressure as you massage it into the skin. Again, work the product into your entire face. If you have sensitive skin, keep the pressure gentler so as not to irritate it. As you rub, you should notice that skin “grits,” which are tiny balls of buildup, will appear.

    4. Rinse

Using warm water, thoroughly rinse off your face, sending all of those skin grits down the sink. Apply a cold, damp towel to your face to close your pores, then let your face air-dry.

You may want to follow up with a light serum to rehydrate your skin, something like our Dreamy Glow Drops. This baby is packed with five types of hyaluronic acid for an instant hit of moisture to leave you glowing. Your skin should feel smooth and soft to the touch, a perfect canvas to apply makeup or go all natural with your new, fresh glow.

How Often Should You Perform Skin Gritting?

Remember, over-cleansing of facial skin can actually start to cause skin issues. Skin gritting should only be reserved for when you need a deep clean after buildup has accumulated and skin is starting to look dull, or when you notice visible blackheads.

We recommend skin gritting no more than once a week. Any more than this could start to strip your skin of the good stuff. If your skin is extra-sensitive, maybe stick to every other week.
